How to make a scene and characters with a reference image. Edwardian Batman series in MidJourney

Right now making a custom scene that has continuity is more difficult than it needs to be in MidJourney. In this tutorial, we’re going to make a scene starting with an image. For this scene, I am going to make a series of images based off of one style. What we have to do is:

  1. Pick a subject
  2. Pick a style
  3. Use that reference image to make more images

I have decided to make a scene of Batman from the Edwardian era. If you are unfamiliar with the Edwardian era, it’s the time between 1901-1914. Let’s open up discord and make our first prompt in MidJourney. I am putting the –quality 5 parameter because I want MidJourney to do the best job possible.

Prompt: Edwardian Batman –quality 5

These are all pretty good. I personally like number 2 the best so let’s push V2 to generate 4 variations

I think number 1 is the best. Let’s go with this one. Sometimes you have to just let MidJourney do a good job with your image. Sometimes if you’re too specific, then it will make your image not as good as the original.

Here we have a good reference image. This will be important if we want to make a scene with this version of Batman.

What you need to do next is copy the image address and open a new tab. We will be using this image for reference a lot. Let’s start to generate lots of images with this reference. What we’re also going to do is add –ar 16:9 to change the aspect ratio. For each prompt, we’ll keep the –quality 5 parameter.

Prompt: *LINK* Edwardian batman in his batmobile –quality 5 –ar 16:9

I like version 2 so let’s make 4 variations.

Variations

Let’s go ahead and upscale version 1 because that one looks the best. As you can see some versions will always be better than others. I recommend taking a good 30-60 seconds to look for artifacts.

Let’s make full-body shots of Batman and the Joker. We’ll need to do this for all of the characters. Change the prompt below for all of the characters. When you’re generating the new character, you shouldn’t use the link. When you’re making scenes in MidJourney, you might need multiple references. We also don’t need a 16:9 aspect ratio so instead, we’ll use a 1:2 aspect ratio. If we don’t do this, MidJourney will cut off the lower part of the character.

Prompt: *LINK* Edwardian batman, showing entire body –quality 5 –ar 1:2

After a lot of work, this was the best I could do. For whatever reason MidJourney does not want to render the legs or boots of Batman. Either way, we’ll go with this format for the other characters. Let’s build the other characters. For each of these, I have made four variations and upscaled the best one.

Joker

Penguin

Catwoman

Mr. Freeze

Scarecrow

Poison Ivy

The Riddler

Two Face

Bane

Ra’s al Ghul

Overall, the images and this blog post took about 2.5 hours to write and produce. I wasted a ton of time trying to get MidJourney to show the entire body. Each of the characters that you see above had the words show the entire body in the prompt. As you can see it only worked out a few times. I’m not sure why. I tried a lot of different things and most of them didn’t work.

When I was generating the images I often had to redo some of the variations or the initial work. Either way, I think this little project turned out quite nice. I will definitely revisit this concept at some point. I will try to use these characters in some sort of scene.
